Recently, I saw strawberry seeds being sold on eBay from hybrid strawberry varieties. I saw ‘Quinault’, ‘Honeoye’, ‘Albion’, ‘Ogallala’ and others. These are all hybrid strawberry varieties. Those who are selling these seeds must not have done well in science class. Hybrid strawberries don’t reproduce true to the variety from seed. Planting seeds of hybrid strawberries will result in poor or no germination or plants that may or may not resemble the parent. Part of what one will get depends on the strawberries in the area as well. Crossing can and does occur easily in nature, though not all types will cross with each other (more on that in another post).
So, don’t get caught by those selling these seeds unless you are a plant breeder and want to select that new million dollar variety – it’s a real long shot.
